Stephen King, arguably America's most successful writer, is a familiar figure to many of us. However, there are some interesting facts about his life you may not have heard before. A few rumors have circulated about his career as well, such as his retirement.
King reportedly bought the van that hit him and planned to hammer it to pieces when the anniversary of the accident came around.
Stephen King allegedly announced he has macular degeneration, an incurable condition that often leads to blindness. However, on his official website he says he is not going blind, he just has a predisposition to the condition.
Before becoming a writer, he worked as a dry cleaner and high school teacher. In addition to writing he owns three Maine radio stations; one has been AP Station of the Year a few times.
Even the famous become involved with alcohol or drugs. King revealed in "On Writing" that he was drunk basically the entire time he was writing "Cujo". In the 80s he had a cocaine addiction and with the help of his wife Tabitha and other friends and family, he did sober up.
King is also in a rock band - Rock Bottom Remainders. Other writers, including Dave Barry, Ridley Pearson and Matt Groening are members as well. In publishing, a remainder is a book that did not sell very well at all, and has been put on deep discount to move copies off the shelves. The band will play Good Morning America on May 31st. There will also be a show on June 1, 2007 at Webster Hall in NYC.
It is often asked whether a movie of the Dark Tower series will be made. In his official site, Stephen King says although the idea isn't completely ruled out, he's resisted the idea because a movie would give a very set idea of what the characters and locations look like, while a book allows everyone to have their own idea. King also says it would be difficult to make the lengthy series into one movie; it would probably have to be done as a trilogy or TV series.
King fans may have heard numerous retirement rumors. On his site, he assures fans he has not retired yet. He is simply writing at a slower pace, and if a great idea comes along he'll be willing to publish it, because he feels publishing completes the creative process.
